Common Myths About Ayurveda
27 April 2026 • Dr. Rasika Ashilwar

Ayurveda is surrounded by as much myth as enthusiasm. Here are a few common misconceptions, addressed plainly and honestly.
Myth: 'It's natural, so it's harmless'
Natural does not automatically mean risk-free. Herbal preparations are medicines with actions and with contra-indications. They should be taken under qualified guidance, matching the individual — not self-prescribed from social media.
Myth: 'Ayurveda cures everything'
Neither Ayurveda nor any single system can credibly claim to cure everything. A responsible practitioner recommends Ayurvedic care where it is appropriate and refers elsewhere where it is not.
Myth: 'Ayurveda is just diet and massage'
Diet and therapies are part of it, but Ayurveda is a complete, reasoned system with its own physiology, diagnosis and therapeutics — applied according to individual assessment.
Myth: 'It rejects modern medicine'
Good Ayurvedic practice complements modern medicine rather than fighting it. Both have strengths, and the patient's wellbeing comes first.
