Understanding Your Prakruti

26 January 2026 • Dr. Rasika Ashilwar

Prakruti is your constitution — the unique combination of physical and mental qualities you are born with. In Ayurveda, every recommendation, from diet to therapy, becomes more meaningful when it is matched to an individual's Prakruti.

Three energies, one you

Ayurveda describes three fundamental qualities, or doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each person has a unique blend of these, with one or two usually more prominent.

Your Prakruti influences everything from your body frame and digestion to your sleep pattern and temperament. Understanding it is not about labelling yourself — it is about knowing how to care for yourself better.

Why it matters

When a treatment or diet feels generic, it is often because it did not account for the person. Prakruti assessment is one of the ways Ayurvedic care becomes personal rather than prescriptive.

A practitioner assesses Prakruti through a detailed consultation — looking at your history, build, tendencies and lifestyle — rather than a quick quiz.
