Understanding Abhyanga

13 April 2026 • Dr. Rasika Ashilwar

Abhyanga is a classical Ayurvedic therapy in which warm, medicated oil is applied over the whole body in long, rhythmic strokes. It is both a therapy and a long-standing daily wellness practice.

More than pressure

The value of Abhyanga lies in the details: the warmth of the oil, the rhythm of the strokes, the direction of movement and the choice of medicated oil. All of these are adjusted to the individual.

Oil suited to you

The herbal oil matters. Different oils are selected based on your constitution, the season and your state of health. This is why Abhyanga at a clinic differs from a generic spa oil massage.

Abhyanga is generally calming and deeply restoring. It is commonly combined with Swedana (steam) as part of a Panchkarma programme.
