Panchkarma
What Is Panchkarma?
9 February 2026 • Dr. Rasika Ashilwar

Panchkarma literally means 'five actions'. It is a classical set of Ayurvedic procedures designed to cleanse and restore balance in the body. While its reputation often centres on purification, a responsible Panchkarma programme is always much more structured than that.
It begins with assessment
No responsible practitioner offers Panchkarma without a prior consultation. The doctor first understands your constitution, current state, digestion and any specific concerns. Only then is a programme planned — and it may be decided that Panchkarma is not appropriate for you at all.
Personalised and guided
A typical programme includes preparatory therapies, the classical procedures themselves, and careful post-treatment guidance. The choice of oils, decoctions, duration and sequence all depend on your individual assessment.
Throughout the programme, the doctor reviews your progress. After the therapies, guidance on diet, rest and routine helps sustain the benefits — because Panchkarma is part of a journey, not a one-time event.
An honest note
Panchkarma is not a miracle cure and it is not for everyone. It is a classical, time-tested approach that should be undertaken only under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, after a proper consultation.
